‘Invalid link’ and other Threads download errors, fixed

By the Thredra Team·Updated May 2026·6 min read

Downloader not working? Nearly every Threads download error traces back to a handful of simple causes — a private post, a half-copied link, or the wrong URL. Here’s how to diagnose and fix each one in seconds.

Start here: the 30-second checklist

  • Is the post public? Private/followers-only posts can’t be downloaded.
  • Did you copy the full link using Copy link (not a screenshot of the URL)?
  • Is your internet connection working?
  • Did you accidentally copy a profile link instead of the specific post?

Most “not working” reports come down to one of these four. Here’s how to fix each error you might see.

“Invalid link” or “URL not recognized”

This means the tool can’t read the address you pasted. Fix it by:

  1. Going back to the exact post and using share → Copy link.
  2. Pasting it fresh, with no extra spaces or characters before/after.
  3. Making sure it’s a single post URL, not a profile, search, or feed link.

“Post is private” or nothing loads

If the account is private or the post is limited to followers, there’s no public media link to fetch — and that’s intentional. You can only download content that’s publicly visible. Check the post in a logged-out browser tab: if you can’t see it there, a downloader can’t either.

“This post has no video / media”

You may have grabbed the link to a text-only post, or to a reply rather than the post that actually contains the video. Open the specific post with the clip playing, then copy that link.

Download starts but the file is broken or won’t play

  • Try a different player (your gallery, then a media player like VLC).
  • Re-download — an interrupted connection can truncate the file.
  • On iPhone, check the Files app if it didn’t appear in Photos.

It worked yesterday, not today

Platforms occasionally change how posts are served, and a specific post may have been deleted or made private since you last saw it. Refresh the page, grab a brand-new copy of the link, and try again. Clearing your browser cache or trying a different browser resolves most one-off glitches.

Still stuck? Confirm the post opens for you in a private/incognito window with no login. If it does, copy that link and retry. If it doesn’t, the post isn’t public — and that’s the real reason the download won’t work.

FAQ

Why does the downloader say ‘invalid link’?
Usually the URL was copied incompletely or isn’t a single post link. Go to the exact post, use share → Copy link, and paste it fresh with no extra spaces.
Why won’t a private Threads post download?
Private or followers-only posts don’t expose a public media link, so they can’t be downloaded. Only publicly visible posts work — check by opening the link while logged out.
The download is broken and won’t play — what now?
Re-download in case the connection cut off, then try a different player like VLC. On iPhone, also check the Files app if it didn’t land in Photos.
It worked before but not now — why?
The post may have been deleted or made private, or the platform changed how it serves media. Refresh the page, copy a brand-new link, and clear your cache or try another browser.

Try the download again — the clean way

Copy a fresh public Threads link, paste it in, and save. Most errors clear up with a correct, public URL.
